The Kwanzaa documentary “The Black Candle” will be screened in the Ossie Davis Theater in the main library on Friday, Dec. 26, the first day of Kwanzaa.
Narrated by the late Maya Angelou and directed by MK Asante, the documentary uses Kwanzaa as a vehicle to explore and celebrate the African-American experience.
The cast includes NFL Hall of Famer Jim Brown, hip-hop icon Chuck D, Kwanzaa founder Maulana Karenga, artist Synthia St. James and many others.
The free screening is appropriate for ages 10 and older, and begins at 2 p.m.
There will also be free holiday craft workshops scheduled for Monday, Dec. 29, at 2 p.m. in the meeting room of the main library, and on Friday, Jan. 2 at 11 a.m. in the Huguenot Children’s Library.
The workshops will be limited to 25 children ages 4 and older on a first-come, first-served basis.
Remarkable Renaldo, the ringmaster clown of Circus Renaldo, will perform in the Ossie Davis Theater of the main library on Tuesday, Dec. 30, at 2 p.m.
Renaldo has performed with circuses worldwide, including Big Apple Circus, Toronto’s Garden Brothers Circus, England’s Zippo’s Circus, SeaWorld in Florida, and Circus Sarasota.
The free performance is appropriate for all ages and is first-come, first-served, up to the capacity of the Ossie Davis Theater.
