New Rochelle Libraries Offer Free Activities During School Vacation Week

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Elementary school-aged children in pre-K through grade 5 are invited to participate in a variety of free programs at the main New Rochelle Public Library and the Huguenot Children’s Library during spring vacation week.

These programs are made possible by the generosity of the Friends of the New Rochelle Public Library and the Partnership for the Huguenot Children’s Library, both non- profit organizations.

  • Spring has Sprung Gardening Adventure will take place Monday, March 30 at 2:30 p.m. in the meeting room of the main library. Children in grades 2-5 will help get the library’s Adventure Garden ready for planting. Participation is on a first-come, first-served basis, beginning at 1:15 p.m.
  • A Family Craft Bonanza Tuesday, March 31 at the main library will be a craft field day for children in pre-K and up, and their parent or caregiver. Participants may drop-in at any time to decorate a tile, concoct a sand art container, fashion some jewelry, bind miniature booklets, create a mural, design a mask and more. On Tuesday afternoon, a performance for pre-schoolers with Evan Gottlieb will entertain children ages 2-6 in the Huguenot Children’s Library Lower Level at 1 p.m. Participation is on a first-come, first-served basis, beginning at 12:45 p.m.
  • On Wednesday, April 1, a magic and comedy show with Jim McClenahan will feature the antics of the beloved magician-comedian. Due the popularity of his show, two performances are being offered in the Ossie Davis Theater of the main library, at 11 a.m. and at 2 p.m. Both are on a first-come, first-served basis, to the 138-seat capacity theater. One performance per person, please.
  • On Thursday, April 2, the Ossie Davis Theater will celebrate the extraordinary storyteller with favorite films based on his tales. From 11 a.m. to 12:05 p.m., a series of short films from Picture Books inspired by Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales will include “The Emperors’ New Clothes,” by Nadine Bernard Westcott; “The Ugly Duckling,” illustrated by Jerry Pinkney' “The Swineherd,” illustrated by Bjorn Winblad; and “Nightingale,” illustrated by Michael Sporn). At 1 p.m., “The Little Mermaid” will be shown. At 3 p.m., the 2014 Disney film, “Frozen” will be the marathon’s finale.
