Officials with the New Rochelle Municipal Arts Commission (MAC) have selected experienced painter Adam Daly to paint a mural on the side of the building at the corner of Main Street and Beechwood Avenue.

Beginning in the fall of last year, the MAC started accepting digital submissions of artists’ visions for the mural. This is the first of several large-scale outdoor paintings that city officials have planned for the coming months.

With his entry, “Fracture,” chosen, Daly will meet with MAC officials to discuss the mural next month, and it will be installed in March. The painter will be awarded $1,500 at a banquet in April for his work.

This won’t be the first mural to adorn the side of a New Rochelle building. In 2008, as part of the Art in Public Spaces program, an outdoor mural by Jeff Schlanger was installed at the Lawton Street Parking lot. There also have been several murals painted by students at various city schools.

According to New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson, the MAC is focusing on giving “visual appeal to some of the large, bare walls that are visible from busy locations.”

He said while he is no art aficionado, he is looking forward to seeing the finished product.

“My own artistic sensibility and knowledge are pretty limited, so I withhold any judgment of the mural itself,” he wrote on his website. “But I can certainly appreciate the positive value of public art and am very grateful to the team of volunteers and city officials who spearheaded the effort.”
