NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- The Mascaro Clubhouse Torch Club hosted its first chess tournament recently at the New Rochelle Boys and Girls Club.
Close to 20 youngsters from third- to sixth-grade participated in the tournament and after two hours of intense competition, Deven Coulanges was crowned as the champion.
The group also sent a shout out to Jayden Arenas for coming in second place.
The participants had so much fun, they would like to start a chess club led by a Torch Club if they can find an adviser to help them with the club, and with mastering the game of chess.
Torch Clubs are charter small-group leadership and service clubs for boys and girls ages 11-13. Its basically the club's student body government.
"A Torch Club is a powerful vehicle through which club staff can help meet the special character development needs of younger adolescents at a critical stage in their development. Torch Club members learn to elect officers and work together to implement activities in four areas: service to Club and community, education, health and fitness and social recreation," said William Iannuzzi, Mascaro Cluhouse director.
