Katie Long, 86, New Rochelle Phys Ed Teacher

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Katie Marie Butler Long of New Rochelle died May 4. She was 86. 

Long taught physical education at New Rochelle Public Schools for 40 years. 

She was born Jan. 2, 1926 in Central, S.C., to Richard and Etolia Reid Butler. She graduated from New York University with a bachelor's degree in physical education and hygiene. Long also received a master's degree in guidance and student personnel. 

An active member of Bethesda Baptist Church of New Rochelle, she most recently attended First Baptist Church in Bronxville. Long was a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, the New York State Association of Physical Education, Health and Recreation and Dance Instructors Association. 

She was an avid tennis and bridge player, a life member of NAACP and Gold Heritage since 1985. Katie was married to Tuskegee Airman and Wilbur F. Long, who predeceased her in 1998. 

She is survived by a daughter, Dr. Karen O. Long-Rowe, and three grandchildren. 

Visitation hours are from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Friday at First Baptist Church. Services will immediately follow at 10:30. Burial will be in Calverton National Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are by Barney T. McClanahan Funeral Home in New Rochelle.
