Projects focus on the environment in support of the Catholic Church’s first ever encyclical devoted to the environment, Pope Francis’ “Praised Be,” published June 2015. An encyclical is one of the highest forms of teaching from a pope as he interprets Catholic doctrine.
This is the service project schedule:
9 a.m.: Service Day opening ceremony, Columba Quad Lawn, Iona College
Hundreds of Service Day participants will gather at Iona College to open the day. Dr. Joseph E. Nyre, president of the college, will make remarks before participants head to their service day sites. Participants will recognize the upcoming Papal visit to New York City with a photograph of all participants welcoming Pope Francis to the U.S. before they head out to their respective service sites.
10 a.m.: Service projects in New York area and Washington, D.C., begin.
Kimberleigh Costanzo, Iona class of ’14 and founder of Wellspring Water, Inc. will be leading a service project in Plainview, New York, at one of the non-profit's collection sites and sharing an educational presentation about their work.
5-7 p.m.: 75th anniversary celebration and Forever Campaign launch.
Students, faculty, staff and alumni will gather on campus under the college’s Ginkgo tree. Iona President Nyre will announce the progress of the Iona Forever Campaign, one of the most significant fundraising initiatives in the college’s history. The Iona Forever Campaign will address affordability through endowed scholarships, professorships and programs, as well as fund campus projects.
