NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Happy Birthday To New Rochelle’s Dick Ambrose!

Dick Ambrose, born in New Rochelle, turns 61 on Friday.

Ambrose, a former football linebacker, who played nine seasons in the National Football League with the Cleveland Browns, from 1975 to 1983, was born January 17, 1953.

During his playing days he was nicknamed "Bam-Bam," after the character of that name on The Flintstones.

Ambrose has been a judge of the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas since 2004. He was the presiding judge in the trial of Anthony Sowell, the Cleveland serial killer who was found guilty on 82 charges. On August 12, 2011 Ambrose sentenced Sowell to death.

Dick Ambrose (nicknamed "Duck" in High School, at Iona Prep in New Rochelle, New York) commonly overpowered the offensive players while playing linebacker. Ambrose holds a Bachelor of Science in education from the University of Virginia. He began his legal studies while still playing football for the Cleveland Browns, graduating magna cum laude in 1987 from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. Although a native New Yorker, he has been a Clevelander for over 30 years.
