Bishop John Joseph Nevins, born in New Rochelle, turns 82 on Sunday.
Nevins, the auxiliary bishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Miami (1979–1984) and the first bishop of the diocese of Venice, Florida (1984–2007), was born Jan.19, 1932.
Nevins was ordained a priest on June 6, 1959. On Jan. 25, 1979, he was appointed by Pope John Paul II as auxiliary bishop of Miami.
On July 17, 1984, he was appointed the first bishop of the diocese of Venice, Florida, where he remained until he retired on Jan.19, 2007.
