NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Happy Birthday to New Rochelle’s Jeralyn Merritt.
Merritt, who graduated from New Rochelle schools, turns 64 on Saturday. She was born Sept. 28, 1949, in New York, NY.
Merritt is a criminal defense attorney in private practice in Denver, Colorado, since 1974. She served as one of the principal trial lawyers for Timothy McVeigh in the Oklahoma City bombing case in 1996 and 1997. In 2002 Merritt founded and the blog TalkLeft: The Politics of Crime. She also serves as a legal commentator for news media programs and as an internet journalist.
In 1995 she received the first annual Marshall Stern Legislative Achievement Award, from the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. In 2008 she received the Al Horn Award from the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, "a Lifetime achievement award for advancing the cause of justice and extraordinary support of NORML."
