Merritt, who graduated from New Rochelle High School, turns 65 on Sunday.
Merritt, a criminal defense attorney in private practice, was born Sept. 28, 1949, in New York City.
In 1996 and 1997, she was one of the principal trial lawyers for the defense of Timothy McVeigh in the Oklahoma City bombing case in 1996 and 1997.
In 2002 Merritt founded the blog TalkLeft: The Politics of Crime. She also serves as a legal commentator for news media programs and as an internet journalist.
In 1995 she received the first Marshall Stern Legislative Achievement Award, from the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. In 2008 she received the Al Horn Award from the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, "a Lifetime achievement award for advancing the cause of justice and extraordinary support of NORML."
