Habitat For Humanity Executive Director Jim Killoran said he has been in the Rockaways in Queens for 32 straight days. Killoran said he has more than 100 volunteers, many of whom are from Westchester County, helping out as well. In addition to money, people donated supplies such as bottled water and bleach.

“This can be seen as the best response in New York in the history of our country," Killoran said. “Without the volunteers, there would still be people suffering. There are still thousands of people without electricity down there. Many people have rented apartments for six months while they are fighting for insurance. The ultimate holiday gift this year is to help someone affected by Sandy."

Mike Scaccalossi was one patron who donated to Hurricane Sandy victims. Scaccalossi said he was lucky during Hurricane Sandy, but some family members were without power for about a week.

“We’ve gone to the Jersey Shore every summer for the past five years and some of the places we go to don’t exist anymore,” Scaccalossi said. “I can’t wrap my head around the fact that some people have nothing. I want to throw some support and learn how I can help more.”

Dudley’s co-owner Neil Davis said he had to close his business for six days following Hurricane Sandy due to three feet of flooding in the bar. Davis said he’s used to the business getting flooded, but not that much.

“We were all so affected by it that we wanted to help people that were affected by it more,” Davis said. “It’s unfortunate that people on Staten Island and the Rockaways got hit worse than us. I can’t image it.”
