Habitat For Humanity Of Westchester Dedicates Home For Veteran

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – In an effort to ensure that every soldier has a place to call home when they return from service overseas, Habitat for Humanity of Westchester has continued their now annual tradition of building and dedicating houses on Veterans Day.

On Wednesday, Habitat CEO Jim Killoran and volunteers from the organization celebrated the holiday by formally dedicating a Yonkers home on Purser Street to Ivan Arroyo – a National Guard reserve that fought in Kandahar – and his family.

Last year, a pair of refurbished homes on High Street were dedicated to two veterans that served in Iraq.

Arroyo has been a Yonkers resident for more than four decades. In a letter to Habitat for Humanity officials, he pleaded that this project was necessary, stating that “having to try to keep my family away from all the crime was stressful for all of us. Not being able to sit outside my door with my family was stressful.”

Wednesday’s dedication marks the fifth home that has been approved for a veteran and his family in Westchester. According to Killoran, “Arroyo’s words embody what the Habitat for Humanity of Westchester wants to give everyone: a simple, safe home.” Habitat was able to “give Arroyo the simplicity he has been searching for.”

“We are honored to be able to give another veteran a home,” Killoran said. “Ivan is a true hero. Habitat of Westchester is committed more now than ever to abolish the crisis of affordable housing in this country.”
