College Of New Rochelle Celebrates St. Angela Merici Feast Day

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- The College of New Rochelle celebrated the annual Feast Day of St. Angela Merici with a Mass at The Holy Family Chapel.

The college was established by the Ursuline Order of nuns, which was founded by the saint in 1535.

Following the Feb. 6 Mass, nine College of New Rochelle students received Ursuline Student Service Recognition Awards for their contributions to both the college and local communities, representatives said. 

  • Shamella Bartholomew, class of 2015, received her award from Dean Richard Thompson, School of Arts and Sciences. As a member of Campus Ministry, Bartholomew participated in the Hurricane Sandy beach cleanup on Long Island Sound, organized the Special Olympics competition for last spring’s community service day and took a leadership role for the College’s Midnight Run program. “We might have saved someone’s life,” says Shamella.
  • Cassandra Castro, class of 2014, received her award from Dean Mary McGuinness, School of Nursing. As a member of the Student Nurses’ Association, Castro implemented the Mentor-Mentee program and is currently working on developing a Student Experience Panel to expose nursing students to career opportunities.
  • Charlotte Freeman, class of 2014, received her award from Dean Darryl Jones, School of New Resources. As a sergeant first class in the Army Reserve, Freeman serves as a volunteer liaison at a Military Readiness group assisting military personnel and their families. She also volunteers at the Southeast Bronx Neighborhood Center and continues to raise awareness of events at the center among her New Resources classmates. “It is a disservice to society not to enable others to reach their full potential,” said Freeman.
  • Janice Rose, Katelynn Grim, Marnie Herlands, Amanda Sambets, Monica Sanchez , all class of 2014 and Akimie Worrell, class of 2015, received awards from Dean Marie Ribarich from the Graduate School. As a group, they took a trip to the Dominican Republic in spring-break 2013 to work for Fundacion Crecimiento Comunitario Proyectando Esperanza (Foundation to Project Growth and Hope in the Community). During their stay, the students led art therapy sessions for children and their parents.
