Anita Brown, New Rochelle Artist, Dies at 87

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Anita Vogler Brown, of New Rochelle, died suddenly on Dec. 15. She was 87. 

An artist, she was active in New Rochelle schools, arts programs and rights organizations. Her mural hangs near Mamaroneck Metro-North Station. 

Brown was born Sep. 21, 1924 in Krakow, Poland to Romana and Marotiz Vofler. She left Nazi-occupied Europe for England, the Dominican Republic and Cuba before arriving at the U.S. She settled in the Bronx in 1941 and married Seymour Brown on January 14, 1956.

Five years later, they moved to New Rochelle, where Brown would participate in a variety of organizations. She was a member of the Parent Teacher Association at Trinity Elementary School, The New Rochelle Council on Arts, The New Rochelle Art Association and Mamaroneck Artists Guild.

Brown was an avid sculptor, usually working in stone. She participated at juried shows at Lincoln Center, SUNY Purchase and the New Rochelle Public Library among others. One of Brown's sculptures is set to be a centerpiece of the New Rochelle Holocaust Memorial.

Other affiliations included serving as co-president of the New Rochelle League of Women Voters and member of the Hadassah Women's Organization and the Westchester Coalition for Legal Abortion. She also sought community enrichment through membership with The New Rochelle Clean City Committee.

Brown is survived by her son Michael R. (Kimi) Brown and was predeceased by her husband Seymour.

Funeral arrangements will take place at Riverside Memorial Chapel in Mt. Vernon at 10 a.m. on Sunday. Memorial donations may be made to The Anti-Defamation League, Attn: Development, 605 Third Avenue, New York, NY 10158, or the Jewish National Fund, 42 East 69th Street New York, NY 10021.
