Thankfully, The Beat Goes On For Fairfield Man

VALHALLA, N.Y. -- In our lives, a lot can cause us to feel a little pain. Spending too much time sitting, doing yard work, exercising and other daily activities can tweak any number of muscles and joints. However, sometimes these pains are not just pains. For Rick Nagy, of Fairfield, his aches and pains were the warning sign of an impending disaster.

Rick Nagy, 61, of Fairfield suffered a heart attack without even knowing it, and eventually required a heart transplant from doctors at Westchester Medical Center.

After a weekend of yard work in August 2013, Nagy, 61, noticed an aching in his neck and arms. A college football player and still active despite his age, Nagy just shook off the pain. However, when the pain refused to abate he paid a visit to his primary physician to make sure everything was alright. Turns out, everything wasn't.

“He did an EKG, then walked out,” Nagy remembers. “He returned with an aspirin and a beta blocker, and told me an ambulance was on the way.” Nagy had suffered a heart attack without him knowing. That day, he was treated with a bypass and spent three weeks recovering in the hospital.

A week after returning home, Nagy, who’d been sitting quietly, doing a crossword puzzle, noticed his 13-year-old son, Kyle, was on the phone. “He said he’d called 911,” Rick says. “I asked why, and he said, ‘I called it for you.’”
