'Out Of The Blue' Wows New Rochelle Commuters With Pop-Up Performance

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Some New Rochelle commuters were treated to a special performance from one of Europe’s up-and-coming singing groups as the New Rochelle Council on the Arts continued its 40th anniversary celebration.

“Out of the Blue,” an a capella troupe from Oxford in England serenaded commuters at the New Rochelle train station Wednesday morning, offering an impromptu performance in a NRCA “arts encounter,” which will continue throughout the year as the organization celebrates its fourth decade in the city.

The group performed a concert Tuesday at the New Rochelle High School before surprising train riders Wednesday morning with their renditions of several popular songs. The group, which qualified as semi-finalists on “Britain’s Got Talent, is set to tour in the United States, with its first stop being in New Rochelle.

New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson, who was on hand for the performance, said the experience was something locals won’t forget any time soon.

“Out of the Blue gave a great performance,” he said. “But even more memorable were the looks of surprise and delight on the faces of so many commuters, whose daily routines were suddenly transformed into something special. The NRCA’s Arts Encounters are already creating a new buzz of cultural energy in our city, with more to come.”

NRCA President Theresa Kump has noted that “the idea of the Arts Encounters series is to “bring art to people where they live.”

“The idea is to remind everybody how the arts enrich our daily lives with a series of unexpected ‘Arts Encounters’ – pop up performances in public spaces all around New Rochelle,” she said.

“The plan is to keep the community guessing about where and when the next ‘Arts Encounter’ will happen,” Leghorn mused. “It might be as simple as live music on a street corner, or as choreographed as a dance performance in a building lobby.”

Earlier this year, Arts Encounters have included an impromptu performance by singer and songwriter Garry Novikoff and art reception in honor of the organization’s birthday.

Bramson credited the NRCA for hosting the series of pop-up performances in the spirit of the organization.

“The New Rochelle Council on the Arts deserves thanks for arranging this appearance and similar pop-up performances – all part of their ‘Arts Encounter’ series, which aims to give our city an extra buzz of cultural energy in unexpected ways,” he said.
