NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- NR Future discussed two major upcoming projects, the implementation of a the Interest Food Project and renovations to the Oasis Homeless Shelter at its Feb. 16 meeting.
December Grant Winner, Maggie Burke. Maggie spoke to the group regarding her idea, Interest Food Project.
“Interest Food Project is an idea that will establish heirloom gardens in the backyards of an elderly or low income person’s home."
The homeowner will have the ability to plan and participate in the gardening process at no cost to the homeowner.
Burke will maintain the garden, with the understanding that any extra produce will be distributed to those less fortunate and 10 percen of the harvest will be sold at a local market in order for the program to remain self sufficient and continue.
The Interest Food Project needs a total of 25 Likes from the community to receive funding. Community members can find her idea by clicking here to Like it and help her reach this goal.
Larry Mosley, Director of Oasis Homeless Shelter gave the group an overview of the current conditions of the shelter.
"Because of budgetary constraints the shelter struggles to maintain the facility and keep providing the services needed to assist the homeless that come to its doors. At present the shelter as several issues that need to be address immediately, these issue include:
- Repairing and re-tiling of the floors.
- Repairing and painting of the walls and ceiling.
- Repairing and replacing broken windows and window frames.
- Elimination of pest and bugs from the facility.
These are items that are not in the budget or that cost more than we are presently budgeted to complete," Mosley said.
