RYE, N.Y. -- Starbuck's new limited edition unicorn frappuccino is getting a lot of buzz on social media and in particular on Instagram where its multi-colored pastel hues make for a great photo opp.
But in a Rye Starbucks on an overcast Thursday morning, most folks were sticking to their usual orders. Many said it's something they'd get for their kids but looked too sweet for them.
"How many calories are in something like that?" asked Jon Watnick of Rye, who was busy sipping his back decaf. "It looks interesting but it's something my 11-year-old daughter would like, not me."
It was a sentiment echoed by Milan Yokuty, also of Rye, who has three children, ages three, six and seven.
Even Erin Colagiovanni, who had her young toddler in tow, said it's not something she'd get for him, despite the pretty pink and blue colors, sprinkles, and whipped cream.
"I could see coming back later, however, for my 5-year-old daughter," she said.
"Once she sees a picture of it, she'll totally want it."
According to Starbucks, the drink changes colors and flavors as you sip it, starting off "sweet and fruity transforming to pleasantly sour."
Emily Raho said it tasted like a sour milkshake. The Rye resident had been curious about the new concoction since seeing it on social media. The drink was introduced Wednesday, April 19.
A barista at the Rye Starbucks said, so far, the unicorn has been proven to be a hit, albeit among the shop's younger clientele. "Anytime something new comes out it's always very popular."
The unicorn frappuccino is available at participating Starbucks through Sunday, April 23. Tell us what you think or better yet, send a photo and post on our Facebook page.
