After months of fundraising, the sixth annual Glen Island Park Polar Plunge returns to New Rochelle. Hundreds of “plungers” will dive head first into the frigid water, with proceeds benefiting the Special Olympics New York.
It’s going to be a rough go of things for the plungers, as temperatures are expected to continue dropping. According to the National Weather Service, Saturday should see clear skies with temperatures hovering around 45 degrees, though the wind chill is expected to drop that figure closer to 25 degrees.
“This seemed like a good idea when I agreed to it back in the summer. Temperatures were in the 80s, the sun was shining, November was far away. Why not say 'Yes'?” Bramson mused on his personal website. “Well, November is now upon us, weekend temperatures are expected to dip into the low 40s and I am committed to the Polar Plunge this Saturday.”
So far, the Glen Island Polar Plunge has raised more than $50,000, nearing the stated $65,000 goal. All proceeds benefit the 64,659 Special Olympian New York participants in 22 sports.
“I will at least take a symbolic dip into the freezing water, and maybe more, if hypothermia doesn’t get me first,” the mayor continued. “Even if I am physically miserable on Saturday, I’ll be happy, in a sort of abstract way, to do my little part to benefit the Special Olympics.”
