In coordination with the New Rochelle Department of Development, officials from both organizations are accepting digital submissions that will be translated onto the side of a building near the intersection of Main Street and Beechwood Avenue.
According to the Municipal Arts Commission, artists may submit their proposals singularly or as a team. There will be trained assistants on hand to aid in the technical application of the mural. The winner will receive $1,500, to be awarded at a banquet in April and a $300 stipend to cover the costs of executing the mural.
“Artists are asked to create a depiction of their proposed mural that closely indicates how they envision their work in real space. Photoshop renderings are preferred. Artists are expected to execute the murals themselves on-site.”
Deadlines to submit a proposal is Monday, Dec. 15. The winner will then meet in February of next year to discuss the mural with the Municipal Arts Commission and then it will be installed in March.
This won’t be the first mural to adorn the side of a New Rochelle building. In 2008, as part of the Art in Public Spaces program, an outdoor mural by Jeff Schlanger was installed at the Lawton Street Parking lot. There have also been several murals painted by students at various city schools.
