"In memory of the New Rochelle residents who gave their lives in active duty while serving in in the Civil War, Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the War in Afghanistan, the exhibit includes the names of all the heroes and many of their photographs," according to a press release.
The memorial tribute will be on display during regular library hours.
The exhibit was assembled by Eugene Longhi, American Legion Post No. 8 Historian, working in conjunction with Barbara Davis, city historian, and library staff and volunteers. The exhibit panels were designed by Jesse Sanchez, and have been made possible by a grant from the Friends of the New Rochelle Public Library.
In addition to the opening of the exhibit, the library will be inaugurating a World War II Service Personnel Database. The World War II Book of Honor lists the names of 8,951 men and women from New Rochelle who served in World War II from 1941 to 1946.
"Many of them were featured in articles in the local Standard-Star newspaper that were clipped and organized by librarians during and after the war," representatives said in the release. "Over the past seven years, volunteers have photocopied onto acid-free paper, scanned, and processed over 5,000 articles. The photocopies are organized in binders located in the E.L. Doctorow Local History Room. The digital copies have also been organized in a searchable database that will be accessible on the library’s website."
