As part of the New York Downtown Revitalization Initiative, the governor’s Mid-Hudson Regional Economic Development Council will nominate one downtown business district to invest $10 million in the community this month.
Already a year into the redevelopment, local officials are circulating a petition, allowing residents to show their support and express why the city is “best positioned to take advantage of the investment, based on its capacity to spur job growth and attract future private and public interest.”
“By signing, and encouraging your friends to sign, you can help demonstrate that the people of New Rochelle support positive changes in our downtown,” Mayor Noam Bramson stated when announcing the petition. “$10 million would be a huge shot in the arm for our city and for our ambitious downtown plans, so please help New Rochelle win!”
The petition notes that due to New Rochelle’s “community-driven,” downtown development program, “the city is uniquely positioned to take immediate advantage of state assistance and to leverage state dollars for maximum positive impact.”
According to the braintrust behind the redevelopment plan, New Rochelle “will see unprecedented growth, bringing in thousands of new residents while creating hundreds of jobs.”
“The rezoning will not only bring new employment opportunities and services to the city’s residents, but will also attract significant new private investment to the city and generate tens of millions of dollars in incremental tax revenue to allow the city to continue to prosper in years to come,” RXR Realty CEO Scott Rechler said last year. “(Our plan) will build on and enhance all that is special about this unique Westchester community.”
New Rochelle residents interested in signing the petition or reviewing the city’s application to the state Downtown Revitalization Initiative can do so online.
