Happy Birthday To New Rochelle's Richard Roundtree

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Happy birthday to New Rochelle native Richard Rountree!

Roundtree, who is best known for his portrayal of Detective John Shaft in the 1971 movie "Shaft," turns 74 on Saturday, July 9. 

Roundtree attended New Rochelle High School where he played on an undefeated and nationally ranked football team. 

He went on to star in sequels to "Shaft" including: Shaft's Big Score (1972) and Shaft in Africa (1973). He also played slave Sam Bennett in the 1977 television series Roots.

Roundtree was diagnosed with male breast cancer in 1993 and underwent a double mastectomy and chemotherapy.

Roundtree currently co-stars as the father of "Being Mary Jane" aired on BET since 2013.
