Following an unusually long, harsh winter, bike shops have become hot destinations as people look to stretch their legs and enjoy the outdoors now that Mother Nature’s wrath has abated.

With National Bike Month officially underway and with the kick-off of Bicycle Sundays on the Bronx River Parkway this weekend, Ben Chertoff, an assistant manager at Danny’s Cycles in New Rochelle, said things have been extra busy at the shop.

“Usually, the way it goes, on the first warm day when there’s no ice, we’ll see something of a rush,” he said. “We’ve been busier this year than last, there’s been a lot of people coming in and out. On a busy Sunday, we might have a line out the door.”

During the winter, Chertoff said the employees of Danny’s Cycles – which has four locations throughout the county, with additional stores in Connecticut – primarily are preoccupied with preparing the shop for the following summer. With an informal “opening day” Friday, he expects things to continue ramping up until the cold weather returns.

Popular bikes this season include hybrids, which are ideal for commuting and riding on paths, as well as the traditional mountain bike. This year also has seen a run on electric rides and thick-tired bicycles that can provide more grip in the elements.

“For us, we’ll ask a lot of questions of our customers, because we have to make sure the customer gets the right bike,” he added. “It’s not just about getting the right bike for right now, it’s about getting one you can grow with as you keep riding.”

Eastchester resident Thomas Lawrence, who considers himself a fixture at Bicycle Sundays, said the minute the snow and ice was cleared from the area, he was strapped in and taking his bike for a spin.

“It started as something to get in better shape, but it’s really a lifestyle once you get invested,” he said. “It’s still been pretty cold at times, but I’m just happy that I can get back out there and ride.”
