NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Save the Sound, the Long Island Sound Study and the New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission will host its 23rd annual Citizens Summit, which coincides with Save the Sound's Earth Week celebration, at Iona College on Friday, April 23.
The summit will be held in Iona College's Ryan Library from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It is located at 715 North Avenue, New Rochelle.
This year's summit, “Sound Discoveries: Celebrating Long Island Sound's Past & Charting its Future,” will look back to Adriaen Block's exploration of the sound 400 years ago, and toward the future to prioritize strategies for Long Island Sound’s updated management blueprint, the Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan.
The featured speaker will be Albert Appleton, former commissioner of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection and Director of the New York City Water and Sewer system.
The keynote address by Appleton will focus on the need to learn from the successes of sound-shore communities who are successfully improving Long Island Sound’s environment.
The summit will also feature several panels of experts from government, environment and academia and breakout sessions that will address four priorities of sound management: waters and watersheds, wildlife and habitats, sound communities and science and management. Other focus areas will include the best way to communicate success in and promote funding for the four crucial areas.
Tickets to the event are $35 for adults and $20 for students. Entry to the event includes breakfast and lunch.
