The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) plans to excavate and remove the contaminated soil around the tree roots and under a drainage pipe.
The removal will eliminate potential exposure risks to workers who may have to dig around the trees or repair the pipe in the future. The soil will be transported to a licensed and permitted offsite disposal facility.
Officials say Redstone park remains safe for residents. The contaminated soil that exists is located where park users do not come in contact with it.
