New Rochelle Youths Graduate Friday From Job Training Program

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Fourteen young New Rochelle residents will be ready to enter the workforce Friday after graduating from the New York Youth Works Construction Training Program.

The ceremony takes place at 3 p.m. in New Rochelle City Council chambers.

New Rochelle District 3 council member Jared Rice said he was happy to have worked with the New Rochelle Municipal Housing Authority, Westchester County, and New York State Department of Labor to train the young residents for construction jobs. Some of those trainees already have been placed on the Heritage Homes construction site on Winthrop Avenue.

"It is wonderful when different agencies work together for the greater good of the community," he said in an e-mail.

The city selected the 16- to 24-year-olds for the $274,000 grant program that provides job training to people who didn’t have jobs or the resources to get job training.

Participants worked with downtown businesses and the New Rochelle Public Library for eight weeks to gain on-the-job experience and to learn how to dress and prepare for an interview.

The Youth Bureau and housing authority each received $137,000 in grant money from the state and participating business got $4,000 in tax credits.

The City Council gave the youth bureau the OK to start the program in September.
