Faith-based leaders, local officials, police members and activists are sponsoring a rally at the park from 2-3:30 p.m., according to a press release.
Music, spoken word and remarks from the community are planned, including performances from Jordan and Clarissa Sinceno, spoken word artists Carter Graves and Noah, and guitarist Odane Willby, according to a press release.
New Rochelle City Council member Jared Rice looked forward to the Youth-Police Initiative's launch.
“It is a wonderful thing when the community and our police department can both make the effort to work together to better our city," Rice said in a press release. "YPI is exactly the type of program that is needed to bring about greater levels of trust.”
New York Covenant Church, which offers services in New York City and New Rochelle, is one of the host organizations for the event.
“We are very excited to be a part of YPI. YPI has proven to be a great contributor toward the goal of building healthy relationships between youth and police,” church pastor David Holder said in a press release.
The North American Family Initiative helped put the initiative together, and plans are for youth leaders and New Rochelle police members to meet at least five times this summer.
Community activist Angelique Francis praised the city's aid in putting together the initiative.
“I love New Rochelle," Francis said in a press release. "In my opinion, it's the perfect cultural melting pot and this community is worth the city's investment.”
