The New Rochelle Youth Police Initiative (YPI) is a program facilitated by the North American Family Institute that was recently authorized by the New Rochelle City Council.
Coming on the heels of last month’s rally in Lincoln Park, Friday’s event marks the second of five weeklong sessions that have taken place throughout New Rochelle this summer. According to officials, “the goals of the YPI training is to enhance police and community partnerships by cultivating better understanding, enhancing mutual respect and eliminating stereotypes and bias.”
“YPI is a proven model for success,” City Councilman Jared Rice said. “As we embark on new community policing initiatives in New Rochelle, we will seek to implement national practices, just like YPI.”
This week’s event will be held beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Friday at the New York Covenant Church on Main Street, where faith-based leaders, local officials and members of the police department will interact with the members of the community they are tasked with protecting.
“The young men of my church who have been a part of YPI left with renewed attitudes and a heightened sense of social responsibility,” Shiloh Baptist Church Pastor DeQuincy Hentz, said. “Specifically, they have a greater commitment to social responsibility.”
