NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- The New Rochelle Humane Society was packed with pampered pooches on Sunday for its annual dog washing fund-raiser.

More than 100 dogs and their owners came in for baths, nail clipping, micro-chipping, training advice and even paw reading, raising approximately $4,000 dollars for the shelter.

Carol Marinaccio of Harrison, who has served on the shelter's board of directors for three years, said all the proceeds go toward caring for the animals in the shelter.

Marinaccio began volunteering at the shelter when she came to adopt a cat after losing her previous cat of 20 years.

"I was impressed by the staff and volunteers, especially in comparison to other places I had visited," she said.

Her colleague, Dianne Heim of New Rochelle, a volunteer for 17 years who works as the adult volunteer coordinator, said she started volunteering because she was looking for something to do.

"I love animals. I love (this place.) Everyone here is wonderful. Our motto is 'From our home to yours," which means every animal is given a home here until they go to their forever homes," she said.

Irene Math of New Rochelle brought her dogs Tiger and Rocky for baths. Her husband adopted Tiger from the shelter in 2010.

"We come back every year for the wash to help support the shelter," she said.

The shelter's biggest fund-raiser is "Hounds on the Sound," which is scheduled for Oct. 19 at Glen Island Park. The event is a 1.6 mile dog walk around the perimeter of the island. There will also be vendors, food and agility courses. The shelter partners with Pet Rescue of Larchmont and shares the proceeds with Mount Vernon.
