NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Registration has started off slowly for New Rochelle Humane Society’s Hounds on the Sound, but that doesn’t mean the fundraising dog-walk-a-thon won’t be a successful event.

“We think we had around 1,000 people last year,” said Dianne Heim of the New Rochelle Humane Society. “Many were not people who registered to walk in advance but people who registered that day. Some were just people who came to walk their dog in the park, saw us and came over and registered.”

So far they have only 12 people and their pets registered to walk, but would welcome more. Registering early for the event includes extra benefits.

“Anyone who registers in July is eligible to win a drawing for $25 dollars of raffle tickets,” said Heim. “The next drawing will be for anyone who registers in August.”

Hounds on the Sound is an all-day event that takes place Sept. 30 at Glen Island Park in New Rochelle, co-sponsored by Pet Rescue, based in Larchmont, and the New Rochelle Humane Society. The annual festival has food, music, vendors, children’s arts and crafts and a meet-and-greet for dogs and cats up for adoption. All of the money raised goes toward helping homeless animals. Proceeds will benefit both the Humane Society and Pet Rescue, and a portion of the profits will go toward the animals at the Mount Vernon Shelter.

“I love seeing so many people who enjoy spending a day and having fun with their dogs,” said Heim. “It is especially rewarding seeing dogs who were adopted from us being so happy with their new owners and their owners telling us how wonderful the dogs are and thanking us for such a great match.”

Anyone can register for the walk-a-thon or make a donation for the event on the website. Registration is open until the day of the event.
