NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. Musicians took center stage Saturday on the Library Green for the Third Annual New Rochelle Jazz Fest.
The event featured musicians from the Sound Shore of Westchester County, including New Rochelle, White Plains and Larchmont, Event organizer Brian Carter said, adding that it gives the festival a sense of local pride to have residents featured. Carter said the event also featured international artists who performed Saturday night. He said it was fitting that the performances took place in front of the New Rochelle Walk of Fame, which includes some jazz musicians.
The Walk of Fame is awesome and it exemplifies what we are doing here, Carter said. This is great music for the community. We had a shuttle bus picking up senior citizens. We dont have to explain jazz to them.
Carter said the jazz festival existed in some form over the past 15 years but didnt become an official event until three years ago, when the Sister City Committee stepped up with various sponsors.
The Sister City Committee works with La Rochelle, France, for an exchange of musicians and ideas between the two cities.
There is definitely a bridge between the two cities that is growing, Carter said. The Sister City Committee were the ones who financed my first trip to La Rochelle, which further opened up communication. There are a lot of people in La Rochelle that want to come here and play music.
The New Rochelle Jazz Festival will continue Sunday, beginning at noon.
Carter, a drummer, will perform at a jazz festival in La Rochelle from Aug. 16 to 18.
