NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – It’s going to be a star-studded event in New Rochelle on Friday morning, as state and local officials join vendors from around the tri-state area to kick off the annual Down to Earth Farmers Market.

Dignitaries that include the ranks of Mayor Noam Bramson, City Manager Chuck Strome and state Senator George Latimer are expected at 10:30 a.m. for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Huguenot Park to officially open the market.

Beginning on Friday, the Farmers Market - which is marking its fifth anniversary in the city – will be open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. through Friday, Nov. 21.

Each week, vendors will feature an assortment of seasonal fruits and vegetables, organically raised proteins, local crafts and baked goods. This week, farmers will have a special variety of greens, asparagus, tomatoes and strawberries.

This year, beginning with the Fourth of July market – which will have an array of barbecue needs for the holiday – several young, aspiring chefs from the New Rochelle Beth El Day Camp will be serving special treats to patrons.

“The Rockstars” are a group of 7- and 8-year-old girls, led by Camp Director Julie Rockowitz and Assistant Director Deborah Gilwit, that spend their summer learning about sustainability and local foods. They will be present at the market for several weeks to show off what they’ve learned as they prepare goodies for the adults to try.

A complete list of weekly vendors can be found here . Electronics Benefits Terminal (E.B.T.) will be available for shoppers with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
