The smells and sound of summer filled the air, as nearly 100 street vendors, organizations, artists and merchants lined Main Street between Centre and North Avenue on Sunday afternoon for one of the city’s latest events.

Nearby residents dined on everything from ice cream to gyros to sausage and pepper sandwiches as they perused goods that included handbags, jewelry and floral arrangements that were prepared by a series of local business owners.

New Rochelle resident Mary White, who was perusing handbags on Sunday afternoon, said that she and her husband lived in the nearby Halstead building, and stumbled upon the street fair. She noted that it reminded her of when her family lived in Brooklyn

“We were actually going to lunch, then we stepped outside and heard the DJ and found ourselves here,” she said. “We used to go to the Brooklyn Flea Market, so this was a fun little reminder of that.”

It wasn’t all fun and games at the street fair on Sunday. Local organizations from New Rochelle including the Lincoln Park Community Garden Committee, Habitat for Humanity and the Parks and Recreation Department – which was promoting a healthy lifestyle with fitness demonstrations – each took over a small part of Main Street to spread the messages of their causes.

“We came last year, and we’ll come next year if they have it. It’s fun to be able to walk down the street and have an entire fair right in the middle of the city,” Frank LoNigro said while observing some of the fares at the car show. “Can’t beat something that has everything for the family.”
