NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. New Rochelle residents gathered in front of the city's Christopher Columbus statue to honor the man on his holiday Monday.
Attendees milled about in front of the statue at the foot of Hudson Park and listened to the tunes of soloist Quirino Tolli. City officials and representatives from the Italian social club, Casa Calabria, spoke at the ceremony.
Earlier in the day, more than 50 elementary school students, teachers and parents from Jefferson Elementary Schools dual-language Italian program rode their float in New York Citys Columbus Day parade with other members of the community.
