Mighty Mouse is making a grand return home to New Rochelle for the 53rd annual Thanksgiving Day Parade this weekend, where he will float past the historic “K” building that housed Terrytoons Studio, where he was created.

For more than four decades, beginning in 1930, Terrytoons called the “K” building in downtown New Rochelle home. Other famed cartoon characters to come from the studio include Heckle and Jeckle, Dinky Duck, Deputy Dog and the Mighty Heroes.

The Thanksgiving Day parade will be a departure from the norm this year, with the festivities highlighted by massive balloons floating through the streets of New Rochelle in the same vein as the annual parade in New York City.

Other balloons scheduled to join the hometown hero at the parade include a snowman, Mr. Potato Head and Thomas the Tank Engine.

“The most exciting addition to this year’s parade will be a giant balloon for each division,” New Rochelle Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Bob Marrone said. “And who better than our own Mighty Mouse to kick it off.”

This year’s Grand Marshall, who will kick off the parade at 10 a.m. on Saturday, is lifelong resident Grans Bernabei, who has served as the city’s Recreation Supervisor since 1994. He is the Treasurer and President of the Huguenot Lions Club and helped raise more than $30,000 for the John F. Fosina Memorial Scholarship.

Joining Bernabei at the parade will be marchers from local schools, Westchester County organizations, companies and bands from the area. Santa Claus will once again close out one of the largest holiday parades outside New York City.

The parade will be preceded by the New Rochelle Fund for Educational Excellence’s annual pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. at the High School. The parade kicks off at 10 a.m. at the Huguenot children’s library. The route will continue from there to Main Street and up Maple Avenue. There will be viewing stations at Iona College, City Hall, Anderson Park and Memorial Highway.
