Danbury Flyers Cross Country Runners Finish Season Strong

DANBURY, Conn. -- The Danbury Flyers participated in the final two events of the cross country season: the Junior Olympic Regional Cross Country Meet in Smithfield, R.I. on Sunday, Nov. 22, and the Nike Future Stars Cross Country Meet in Wappingers Falls, N.Y. on Saturday, Nov. 28. The Flyers had a strong performance in each of the highly competitive meets.

At the Junior Olympic Cross Country Regional Meet, the Flyers were represented in a wide variety of age categories. The youngest Flyer was Jack Murray in the 8 and Under category, who completed the 2000m course with a time of 9:47.3 in a field of 104 finishers. Guhan Vel ran for the Flyer boys in the 9-10 year-old group on a 3000m course in 15:05.8 against 132 other finishers. The 9-10 year-old Flyer girls also ran a 3000m course. The first Flyer girl to cross the finish line was Daniella Spratt in 16:10.1, followed by Kayla Murray in 16:16.7, Corinne Whelchel in 16:21.9, and Victoria Batista in 17:41.3. The Flyer girls competed in a field of 133 finishers.

Also running a 3000m course were the 11-12 year-old Flyer girls. Madelaine Sweeney was the fastest lady Flyer to finish the race with a time of 12:20.9, closely followed by Gabriella Teixeira with a time of 12:24.9. Other Flyer girls who competed in a field of 153 finishers included Sophia Guervara (13:01.1), Maya Gawley (13:47.6), Sophia Whelchel (13:56.2), Marianna Teixeira (14:03.6), Emily You (15:07.8), and Zoe Bowman (15:47.6).

Competitors in the 13-14 year-old category ran on a 4000m course. Valerie Fox completed the race against 112 finishers for the lady Flyers in 17:29.5. Ryan Caldwell, who represented the Flyer boys against 139 other boys, finished the 4000m race with a time of 13:45.4 in 29th place. Caldwell earned a medal and qualified for the Junior Olympic National Cross Country Meet.

Three Flyer boys competed in a field of 58 finishers in the 15-16 year-old category. Each of them earned a medal and qualified for the Junior Olympic National Cross Country Meet. Spencer Mead completed the 5000m course in 17:06.4 (9th), while Daniel Raya finished in 24th place (17:32.2) and Christian Morais finished in 27th place (17:38.6). Christopher Margres competed in a field of 27 finishers on a 5000m course; Margres ran a time of 17:32.7, which netted him the 12th place medal and qualified him to compete at the National Meet as well.

At the Nike Future Stars Meet, all of the athletes ran on a 3000m course, which traversed extremely hilly terrain. The strong showing by the Flyers transcended all age groups. 

Representing the 9-10 year-old-girls was Danbury Flyer Victoria Batista, who finished with a time of 18:15.40 and took the 8th place medal. Elias Alvarado ran for the Flyers in the 9-10 year-old-boys group; he was clocked at 18:12.10, which earned him a 14th place medal.

Three Flyer girls ran in the 11-12 year-old group. Gabriela Teixeira finished with a time of 13:57.30 and secured the 11th place medal; Marianna Teixeira completed the course in 15:12.60 and in 16th place. Emily You took 19th place with a time of 16:25.40. In this age category, the Flyers were represented by Steven Confesor-Chable, who ran away with the 9th place medal by finishing the race in 16:32.20.

In the 13-14 year-old age group, the Flyers girls took the 8th and 10th place medals. Valerie Fox ran a time of 13:21.20, while Sarah Johnson crossed the finish line at the 14:39.70 mark. The Flyer boys took 20th place in this age category, thanks to Adam Fox, who completed the course in 13:24.30.
