Long Island Man Nabbed For Auto Theft, Burglary Following Brief Pursuit, Police Say

A Long Island man allegedly driving a stolen vehicle was nabbed after an officer spotted him minutes after the theft.

Nassau County police said the incident took place around 11:45 a.m. on Thursday, May 21 in Hempstead when an officer from the Hempstead Police Department spotted the stolen vehicle.

According to detectives, the vehicle had just been stolen minutes prior from AAA1 Transmissions Auto Shop in West Hempstead. 

As the officer attempted to initiate a car stop on Stewart Avenue the driver, identified as Dashante Daniels, 24, of Hempstead, fled the scene northbound. 

Daniels jumped out of the vehicle at Dartmouth Street and fled on foot. After a brief foot pursuit, he was placed into custody.

After a further investigation, it was determined Daniels was also allegedly responsible for a burglary that occurred on Saturday, May 16, at Fulton Used Cars in Hempstead, police said.

Daniels was charged with:

  • Grand larceny 
  • Criminal possession of stolen property, third-degree
  • Two counts of criminal possession of stolen property, fourth-degree
  • Burglary
  • Three counts of criminal mischief 
  • Possession of burglary tools

He will be arraigned on Friday, May 22, in Mineola.
