The victim was pronounced dead at the scene just before 2 a.m., closing the southbound Turnpike until nearly 7 a.m. and creating massive backups stretching across the George Washington Bridge and into New York City.
Authorities were still trying to positively identify the driver around noon Friday, New Jersey State Police Trooper Lawrence Peele told Daily Voice.
The Aprilia motorcycle struck the right guardrail, ejecting the rider, at southbound mile marker 120.5, Peele said.
"He was throw into the center lane and hit by an unidentified vehicle that kept going," the trooper said.
Peele asked that anyone who witnessed what happened or has information that could help identify the fleeing driver call NJ State Police: (609) 882-2000.
