Assemblyman Skoufis Urges Expanded Hours For Post Office Box Access

STONY POINT, N.Y. -- Residents upset with not having access to their post office boxes has prompted State Assemblyman James Skoufis (D-Woodbury) to write to the U.S. Postal Service to ask if they can help by extending lobby hours.

Skoufis said that representing a suburban and exurban Assembly district with many commuters, he has become aware that numerous residents do not return home from work until well into the evening each day. In Postal Service branches that do not have extended lobby hours, these residents with post office boxes are oftentimes limited to one day per week they can retrieve mail -- Saturday.

In his letter, Skoufis said: "In an effort to increase accessibility to thousands of my constituents with post office boxes, I am requesting that your regional office examine the possibility of extended lobby hours at the following branches: Blooming Grove, Campbell Hall, Central Valley, Cornwall, Cornwall-on-Hudson, Goshen, Highland Falls, Highland Mills, New Hampton, New Windsor, Slate Hill, Stony Point, Tomkins Cove, Vails Gate, Washingtonville, and West Point," he wrote.

The remaining branches in the district – Chester, Fort Montgomery, Mountainville, and Sugar Loaf – already have 24/7 lobbies.

Skoufis also stated that he understood that many of branches are not configured with lobbies for extended hours, and asked what it would take to make a reconfiguration possible.
