A wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain began falling late Monday night and is continuing into Tuesday morning across the area, even along the shoreline.
A Winter Weather Advisory that began at 8 p.m. Monday will last until 11 a.m. Tuesday for Northern Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess and Rockland and until 8 a.m. in Southern Westchester, the National Weather Service said.
Sleet, freezing rain, light snow changed over to rain through much of the area as of 8 a.m., with areas north and west still seeing the mixed bag of precipitation, making for treacherous driving conditions that have resulted in numerous accidents.
An accident on northbound Route 22 at I-84, reported at 8:30 a.m., is causing backups.
There have been several accidents on I-84, with the most recent coming at 8:30 a.m. at the westbound Taconic State Parkway (Exit 16) with backups to Ludingtonville Road (Exit 17).
There is also a gale warning in effect for Long Island Sound until 10 a.m. Tuesday with winds from 20 to 40 knots with 6 -to 10-foot seas.
The conditions will be hazardous for small crafts and inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid navigating in these condition, the National Weather Service said.
Here is the forecast:
Tuesday: Rain and sleet will become all rain after 8 a.m. in most of the areas, except areas north and west of White Plains. The high temperature will be near 45 with wind chills of 20 to 30 degrees. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph. The chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New sleet accumulation of less than a half-inch is possible.
Tuesday night: It will be mostly cloudy, with a temperature of 42 degrees.
