Arroyo, a National Guard reserve who served in Kandahar, Afghanistan, is now the owner of a house on Purser Place in Yonkers.
Built through a partnership between Habitat and Horace Mann School in the Bronx, the house is expected to be ready for the family by Thanksgiving.
This is the second year the Westchester chapter has given a house to a veteran on Veterans Day, said Habitat Westchester CEO Jim Killoran.
“These are the days we strive for at Habitat of Westchester. The ability to give a veteran family a safe place to live is always a blessing,” Killoran said.
Arroyo, a 40-year resident of Yonkers, used to volunteer with the Westchester chapter of Habitat for Humanity.
"I had the pleasure of working on the Guzman house on Walnut Street in Yonkers," Arroyo wrote in a letter to Habitat of Westchester. "I asked myself why I would ever deserve to have a Habitat house after working so hard and starting a family at such a young age."
Killoran said Habitat of Westchester makes it a point to help veterans as much as possible. Several veterans work at the Habitat's headquarters on Main Street in New Rochelle.
In addition to dedicating the house to the Arroyo family Wednesday, Habitat officials and volunteers held a ceremony to honor all veterans.
