Digital Calendar Designed In Pelham Helps Families Balance Busy Schedules

PELHAM, N.Y. – After struggling to balance their own kids’ activity calendars, a Pelham couple is revolutionizing the way overwhelmed parents can balance a family full of busy schedules.

Burbio, the brainchild of longtime Pelham residents Julie and Dennis Roche, is a digital calendar that provides families with an easy way to sync their own personal calendars with those of local sports teams, schools, organizations and other Westchester groups.

In between balancing four sports schedules, appointments, volunteer opportunities and other responsibilities on one calendar for a family of six, Julie Roche – who handles the technical side of the business - said it seemed practical to have one place that could be accessed across any device by every member of the family at any time.

“We found ourselves dealing with all these different schedules, and found ourselves spending way too much time balancing putting things on different calendars,” she said. “We thought it would be nice to have one place for every schedule that could be shared.”

A beta version of Burbio – a play on the word suburban (families)  – was released only in Pelham about 18 months ago to great success, leading to a countywide unveiling at the end of last year after a radical revamping of the site and calendar.

“Based on the success in Pelham, we knew we wanted to go to all of Westchester County,” Roche said. “We’ve only been out there a few months, and there’s a lot more we want to do in the area that we’re in, so we’re going to keep building it up.”

Currently, PTA groups, church organizations, local sports squads, schools, libraries and government offices in every Westchester municipality have schedules that can be uploaded on the free-to-use calendar. While Burbio is still fresh locally, Roche said she hopes to possibly expand into Fairfield County, Long Island and New Jersey eventually.

“It’s growing like gangbusters, we’re getting hundreds of new users every week,” she said. “We initially focused on eight to 10 zip codes, but now we’re in more than 50 all over Westchester. We’re starting to saturate through the county, and the goal is to continue that.”
